It was a nice thing to come back to basics.

What interested me today was the physicality of the person which was being portrayed. The intensity of the muscles and the whole body structure, so to speak the skeleton itself. I wanted to understand the meanings of the certain poses. Which parts seemed to be exaggerated in their size, muscle intensity or just defined by a certain colour.

I don’t believe he wanted to represent the beauty of the body, rather the beauty of its own deranged extremities. I wanted to really feel the shapes in my body. Observe which muscle was more contracted/tensed than the other. Also when it came to the transitions, how the other muscle takes over the posture and how the body reacts.

In some paintings if they would be recorded, I would see the tremor from the muscles. These observations helped me today with the execution of the transitions itself.

The same intensity as I’ve seen on them when they were painted, I wanted to transform it into my body and to the transitions in between selected portraits.

Today’s exploration was more on the superficial/physical/mechanical level. I tried to portrait the tension of their bodies.

Tomorrow I might look at them from a totally different perspective.

Report from today´s work

First EXERCISE: 360` (turning on the spot).

I have tried different possibilities WITHIN A 3 MINUTE TIME RANGE.

The first option was without any gesture. I felt like the surveillance camera. It was this constant eye scanning over the room. I fell my body was calm and concentrated on the exercise itself.

I tried with three gesture.

-Gesture (1) I found very challenging. What was challenging the most was the position itself. I felt I was trapped in my own body and my intention on the exercise was much lower. Many distractions were popping in my mind, perhaps from the uncomfortable position.

-Gestures (3) and (18) were much more enjoying. The gesture itself was guiding me around the horizontal line smoothly.

There is also a difference if you use THE BEAT or if you are doing the exercise IN SILENCE. I worked on the beat and If felt it was pushing me constantly forward. Perhaps the choice of the music was wrong, because when I worked without the music, I could much easily connect my mind with the body. I could trust myself more. Also the results showed that my timing was more accurate when there was no music.

Second EXERCISE: The SCORE.

I played with all 6 gestures previously chosen: (1), (3), (18), (29), (33) and (43).

What interested me was: how to keep the physicality of the gesture whilst keeping the attention on the roots. Applying different tempos helped me a lot. I found myself more grounded because I needed to be ready to move at any point, at any direction and with the right intention as well.

It kind of gave me awareness.

The more I deconstructed the gestures, more I was able to find possibilities for further transitions.

Third EXERCISE: Walking into the space, applying gestures.

The beat gave me the power to react fast. Of course the strength was coming from my body, but the music showed me the way to do it. I played with the spontaneous impulses from my head and how my body was able to follow.

I wish I could have more space, therefore I will feel more confortable when choosing the different directions. I didn't like the fact that I had to be careful.

Report from today´s work

During the whole week I’ve been working on different tasks and the scores where I was trying to apply the gestures from Egon Shiele.

The more I studied the postures and his work, more I could rely his work to my personal research. I was interested in the attention of the people posing. For me was interesting to “live” the pose of them. Therefore was mostly the STATE which confronted me with the new ideas, and actually the pure physicality, when shifting from one pose to another (transition).

List of selected words after the first week working process:

GESTURE - Layout

LIMBS - Sex-gender

TENSION - Touch

THE DETAIL - Exposure

FOCUS - Geometry

PRECISION - Lines

SKIN - Expression

MUSCLES - Human being

BONES - Delicacy

COLOUR - Self reflection

The term or rather adjective which has spoken to me the most is SYMBOLISM.

Questions for group discussion at zoom meeting

  1.  What was there which was transporting you from one pose to another? Muscles/bones?

  2.  Have you had a problem focusing on your “branches” while deepening the roots?

  3. Has been the exposed part of your body (arms, back, pelvis...) always present, or have you found moments where you couldn’t incorporate them while making transitions or it just felt unnatural?

  4. Do you think people were actually modelling for him or the painting came out of his imagination?

I was trying something new.

I find it difficult to stick with the similar thing for a long period of time.

What I found interesting today was the calmness that I could get knowing the steps which follow. I felt my body knew what was the next thing and how to go there, so my mind could have been more focused on present and not on what has to come. I also found it a bit "psychic", in a way that when I was chancing from one pose to another I could also identify with the difference personalities.

I know the physicality is the most important part here, but sometimes for me it helps if I experience the situation on the psychological level.

Report from today’s work

Different from yesterday. I moved into the space.
I was not so much working on score as much as where the individual pose takes me. What are the possibilities around the static position and how to transform static image into the moving one. I tried to play with different dynamics and tempos. I tried not to be obvious and excluding the "wow, surprise" effect. I am sure there are still some, heh.

I like the image of condensing the energy and where it can release or rather transform.
For tomorrow I would fancy some new guidance. There are moments when I feel stuck and start to repeat myself. All the material is improvised.
